A Beginning
Entering My Newsletter Era
Growing up on the internet as a millennial was such an experience. There were so many places to gather and then they went away and we shuffled along to the next one.
Let's see, I had/have a Livejournal, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, tumblr, Wordpress, Blogspot, Xanga, TikTok, YouTube, Dreamwidth, the list can probably go on and on if I remember more. And for some reason even with all these options for community and sharing my thoughts, I've actually felt more isolated in recent years than I believe "social media" was supposed to make us feel.
Some of these platforms folded. Some of them were bought by foreign entities. Some of them were bought were assholes and ruined. Some allow Nazis. And some of them have begun AI scraping.
It's frustrating how much I can't seem to find a community. The internet has become so miserable. Sure, maybe it was always miserable, but there was an easier way to carve out non-miserable spaces for yourself. No matter where I go, I say the wrong thing and never build connections with the people I want (or anyone). It feels more like the real world now, not an escape anymore.
So, I have decided to start this newsletter. I’m toying with how many times I update per month and what it will be about. Probably long-form reviews of movies, TV, books if I feel inspired by something. Or just musings on whatever I’m fixating on. Still unsure how personal I want to get on the internet in these times.
Won’t you join me on this journey?
